Rubén Monroy Jr. surely didn’t want to be spending his afternoon on Wednesday, Oct. 21, filling trash bags and loading up boxes from his downtown Mexican restaurant.
But after months of being closed due to the COVID pandemic and after coming to the realization that there was no way the ends would meet under the state-mandated social distancing protocols that cut his dining room in half, he was packing up ·¡±ô±¹¾±°ù²¹â€™s Tequila, Cocina & Vino at 256 E. Congress St.
“The last straw, obviously, was the pandemic,†he explained late Wednesday in a quiet voice that masked any frustration that has built up over the months of not being able to operate his 4-year-old upscale Mexican restaurant. “The pandemic took a big hit on us. We closed in March. It was, for us, difficult to put all of the money together to reopen it.â€

Monroy’s move comes five days after downtown lost a crown jewel, Café Poca Cosa, on Oct. 16. Chef-owner Suzana Davila also blamed the pandemic.

Monroy said he briefly gave takeout a try, but it cost him more to open the doors than what he was bringing in. So he turned his focus on the original ·¡±ô±¹¾±°ù²¹â€™s in Tubac, which had long been a regional staple since it opened in Nogales, Sonora, in 1927.
When the state said restaurants could reopen their dining rooms in May, Monroy crunched the numbers. He had to reduce his seating by half, which he could possibly have made work. But with downtown theaters and venues closed — no symphony concerts, after-theater or concert crowds due to the pandemic shutdowns — Monroy didn’t see any way that reopening made financial sense.
“Obviously the downtown traffic went down and with all of the events canceled, the concerts, the conventions, that was very difficult because (the minimum amount) we have to make monthly to keep it open, we couldn’t make it right now,†he said, noting that the salaries for his two chefs, a mixologist, sommelier and wait staff would eat up any revenues he made with the reduced dining room.
“I didn’t want to close,†he said. “I really love this venue. But economically, until this year when we started to see black numbers, we were always in the red. For us, it was very difficult. Right now the way it is, we don’t have a big patio. We don’t have a parking lot. And those things hit us hard.â€
·¡±ô±¹¾±°ù²¹â€™s joins a growing list of local restaurants done in by the pandemic, including Bianchi’s Italian in Marana, Athens on 4th Ave., Chicago Bar, Perfecto’s Mexican Grill Express, Gee’s Garden and Alibaba Mediterranean.

Once a hive of activity, with its wild decor and university clientele, The Bum Steer now sits sad and vacant at 1910 N. Stone Ave.Ìý
The Steer was one in a group of restaurants, eight in California and one in Tempe called Minder Binders, owned by the company Great American Inc.
It closed in 2010. The building was sold at auction in 2014 for $198,550.Ìý
Delectables — 533 N. Fourth Ave.
Delectables Restaurant was opened for 44 years on North Fourth Avenue before shutting its doors and transitioning into a catering business in 2017.

The cavernous El Parador Restaurant at 2744 E. Broadway, owned by the Jacobs family for nearly 40 years, was known for its buffets, its live mariachi music and popular dance nights.Ìý

If you liked chimichangas. We mean, if you really liked chimichangas, you knew one of the best places to get them was Gordo's Mexicateria on East Broadway, just west of North Kolb Road.Ìý
Diego Valenzuela opened his first Gordo's in 1959 at Prince and Flowing Wells. His second location relocated twice on East Broadway before ending up at 7701.Ìý
He sold the business in 2000.
Shari's First Ave. Drive-inÌý— 2650 N. First Ave.
Much like Pat's on ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥'s west side (which is still open for business), Shari's was an iconic drive-in burger joint on North First Avenue that closed in 2008.Ìý
The spot first opened in 1955 as an ice cream stand, then went through several incarnations before Shari Bartol took over in 1979.Ìý

The 24-ounce Porterhouse steak with a side of vegetables was one of the many items offered at The Grill located at 100 E. Congress Street.Ìý
Open 24-7, Grill was a long-time downtown staple before closing in 2011. The restaurant's Red Room would play host to small touring bands and local musicians.Ìý

Acacia Real Food & Cocktails — 3001 E. Skyline Drive
Chef Albert Hall first opened his popular Acacia restaurant in St. Philip's Plaza, where it earned a AAA Four Diamond award among other distinctions.Ìý
Fast forward to 2016 and the restaurant, which moved to Easy Skyline Drive in 2011, closed due toÌýlow profit margins that came with purchasing high-quality ingredients, Hall told the Star.Ìý
"To limp along is just not our style," Hall said. "It's just not how we do it. We would rather go out on a good note."
