A special education teacher from Sunrise Drive Elementary School was selected to receive the October Teacher Excellence Award from ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ Values Teachers and OfficeMax/Office Depot.
Carmela Zega, who teaches fourth- and fifth-graders in the Catalina Foothills School District, was nominated by her former colleague, Amie Bergersen.
The nomination highlighted Zega’s commitment to all students on campus, as well as her enthusiasm to assist teachers to help impact student learning in the classroom.
Zega has been teaching at Sunrise Drive Elementary since 2012.
The award comes with a $100 gift card from OfficeMax/Office Depot and school supplies.

Open house at ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ High Magnet School
ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ High Magnet School is hosting an open house on Wednesday, Nov. 1 for families of eighth-graders who will be heading to high school next year.
Attendees will have the chance to tour the school, observe student work and performances, and have questions answered by faculty and staff.
Information on open enrollment and the magnet application process will be available.
The open house will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at 400 N. Second Avenue in the school auditorium.
Rincon High School inducts new hall of famers
The Rincon Ranger Foundation is hosting its Hall of Fame Breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 4, at the ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ Country Club.
The honorees include Tom Patrick, Ann Huffman Modica and Gary Grabosch.
Registration starts at 7:30. Proceeds from the breakfast are used for scholarships for Rincon High School seniors.

Marana educator among top 10 ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ Teachers of the Year
Leah Oliver, sports medicine teacher and athletic trainer at Mountain View High School, has been named a Top 10 Teacher in the ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ Educational Foundation Teacher of the Year program.
Oliver has been an educator at Mountain View High School since 1989. In 2017, she received the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Athletic Trainer Service Award and in 2013 she was inducted into the ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame, becoming the first woman inducted.
