Mothers Against Drunk Driving is sponsoring a local walk to raise money to combat impaired driving and to help provide services to victims of DUI crashes.
Supporters of the ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ 5K Dash and Walk Like MADD 2018 hope to raise at least $42,000 at the fundraiser at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at Reid Park. (See box for details.)
“MADD has significant name recognition. Many people know our name, but they may not know the full extent of services we provide, which include educational services and victim services,†said Rachel Hersh, development officer of MADD’s ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ office.
Services include victim advocates, who provide a support system for victims and their families, offer accompaniment to court proceedings and provide assistance with community resources and referrals. MADD also helps to facilitate peer-to-peer support for victims and their families.

Hersh said many walkers are gratified to learn that all funds raised at the walk will remain in ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ as MADD raises awareness about the dangers of both drugged driving and drunk driving.
“Our goal is ultimately to end drunk driving and drugged driving as well. We recently added that to our mission since we see people driving under the influence of marijuana and other drugs that create significant impairment,†said Hersh.
