The question is often asked, 鈥淗ow do we solve the homeless problem?鈥 This question is often posed as if there is one all inclusive solution.
Some people think the Supreme Court got it right 鈥 arrest them for sleeping on our sidewalks and in our parks. Some think our Legislators should cut back on funding social safety-net programs so as to motivate those people to pick themselves up by their bootstraps. Some think our Legislators should increase funding for homeless and low-income members of our society. Some wish those people would just go away.
Each of us can work toward reducing the number of unhoused individuals/families, as well as the low-income people living on the edge of homelessness, by viewing them as individual humans, as opposed to "the homeless problem."
Two books that support this idea: 鈥淲hen We Walk By鈥, by Kevin Adler, and 鈥淧overty, By America鈥, by Matthew Desmond.
