Sophomore infielder Jacob Blas is away from the ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ baseball team for the time being to deal with a personal matter.
Blas started each of the Wildcats’ first six games, dividing his time between second base and shortstop. He did not play in the second or third game of ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥â€™s series at Houston this past weekend. He’s batting .235 this season with two doubles and two RBIs in 17 at-bats. Blas has walked six times, boosting his on-base percentage to .440.
A favorite of UA coach Jay Johnson, Blas became a regular as a freshman in 2018. The product of Carlsbad, California, hit .305 with 27 runs scored and 28 RBIs in 43 games, including 35 starts.
It’s unclear when Blas will return. In his absence, freshman Dayton Dooney and senior Justin Wylie will share time at second base. The two have combined for six hits in 21 at-bats with five RBIs and nine walks. Junior Cameron Cannon will play shortstop full time.
