Coaching in college football can be a small world and such was the case last week when Marshall — the Thundering Herd — hired former ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ offensive coordinator Rod Smith to replace Seth Doege, recently hired to be ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥â€™s offensive coordinator.
You could write a very compelling book about the history of ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥â€™s offensive coordinators across the last 45 years. Here’s an abridged version of those 14 men:
Steve Axman, 1980-84: Hired from Illinois. Left to coach Denver in the new USFL. Became head coach at NAU and coordinator at UCLA (twice), Washington, Stanford and Maryland. Grade at ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥: B-plus.
Chuck Stobart, 1985-86: Hired from Pitt. Left to be OC at USC. Became head coach at Toledo and Utah. Grade at ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥: B.
Ben Griffith, 1987: Hired from New Mexico. Instituted “hambone’’ offense. Fired. Coached at Georgia Southern. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: F.

Rip Scherer, 1988-89: Hired from Alabama staff. Became head coach at Memphis and James Madison, coached for three NFL teams. Grade at ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥: B.
Pat Hill, 1990-91: Hired from Fresno State staff. Left to coach for Cleveland Browns, later head coach at Fresno State. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: B.
Duane Akina, 1992-95: Had been ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥â€™s secondary coach and assistant head coach. Moved back to defense in 1996. Hired by Texas in 2001. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: C for offense on defense-first team, A for defense.
Homer Smith, 1996-97: Hired away from UCLA. Former head coach at Army. Hall of Fame level coach. Retired in 1998. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: A.
Dino Babers, 1998-2001: Promoted from UA staff as receivers and running backs coach. Left to be offensive coordinator at Texas A&M. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: B-plus.
Mike Canales, 2004-06: Hired from New York Jets staff. Fired after three years at ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥. Was assigned massive rebuilding job. Has coached at Tennessee, Utah State, UTEP and three other schools. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: C-plus.
Sonny Dykes, 2007-09: Hired from Texas Tech staff. Left to be head coach at Louisiana Tech, now at TCU. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: A-plus; probably best OC in school history.
Seth Littrell, 2010-11: Hired from Texas Tech, was promoted from UA staff. Struggled. Fired. Became head coach at North Texas, fired last year as Oklahoma OC. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: D.
Rod Smith, 2012-17: Hired from Indiana staff. Followed orders of Rich Rodriguez, who called the plays. Now at Marshall. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: D-plus.
Noel Mazzone, 2018-20: Hired from Texas A&M staff. Benched Khalil Tate. Fired. Has been an analyst at UConn. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: F.
Brennan Carroll, 2021-23: Hired from Miami Hurricanes. Terrific recruiter and offensive line coach, but Jedd Fisch called and designed the plays. Now at Washington. ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ grade: B-plus.
Babers, 2024: Returned to UA after head coaching jobs at Bowling Green and Syracuse. Had lost the play-calling magic exhibited in 1998. One-year contract. Grade at ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥: D.
Best of the ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ OC’s over those 45 seasons: Dykes, Homer Smith and Axman. In other words, Doege has a tough act to follow in a community with little patience as he tries to get it done.
