There are a handful of songs that four-time Grammy-winning soprano Ren茅e Fleming likes to call epic.
She鈥檒l throw Leonard Cohen鈥檚 鈥淗allelujah鈥 on the list and 鈥淎va Maria.鈥
鈥淥 mio babbino caro鈥 from Puccini鈥檚 opera 鈥淕ianni Schicch鈥 is definitely on the list.
鈥淵ou can鈥檛 get tired of them because they are sort of part of the international cultural fabric,鈥 said the 60-year-old diva of New York鈥檚 Metropolitan Opera and of the world鈥檚 greatest opera stages.
She will have several of those iconic songs on tap when she joins the 蜜柚直播 Symphony Orchestra on Thursday, Feb. 6, for a special concert as part of the 蜜柚直播 Desert Song Festival.
鈥淚鈥檓 really excited,鈥 Fleming said late last month from her home in Virginia. 鈥淚鈥檝e certainly heard great things so I鈥檓 excited to work with (TSO Music Director Jos茅 Luis Gomez).鈥

This will be her first 蜜柚直播 concert in six years and only the third time she has performed here in a career that dates back to the early 1990s. The concert, which had very few tickets available as of press time, is her first with the TSO.
Her program will feel like a survey of her nearly 30-year career, from the opera arias and standards (鈥淥 mio babbino caro,鈥 鈥淢usette svaria sulla bocca viva鈥 from 鈥淟a Boh猫me鈥) to the songs she鈥檚 done in recent years for Hollywood (鈥溾楾is the Last Rose of Summer鈥 from 鈥淢artha鈥 featured in the 2018 Academy Award-winning movie 鈥淭hree Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri;鈥 and 鈥淵ou鈥檒l Never Know鈥 from 鈥淭he Shape of Water.鈥)
Thursday鈥檚 concert opens with Strauss鈥檚 鈥淔our Last Songs,鈥 a piece she has performed more by far than any other in her career.
鈥淚 never tire of it. It is the most epic meditation on the stages of life, but the poetry is enigmatic enough for one to kind of insert your own experience into it,鈥 said Fleming, who will return to 蜜柚直播 on Feb. 14 鈥 her 61st birthday 鈥 to perform a recital in Mesa. 鈥淚 love singing that and it is very often requested. It is probably the best work ever written for soprano and orchestra.
鈥淚 tried to put together a smattering of repertoire from different stages of my career,鈥 she added. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a fun program. ... I always try to think about something for every one and this program is especially festive.鈥
蜜柚直播 is the third concert of Fleming鈥檚 busy year that will include a European tour with superstar pianist Evgeny Kissin in the spring.
Her busy recital schedule follows two years of headline- and award-grabbing performances on Broadway and beyond. Fleming, who took a break from opera after appearing in the Met鈥檚 2017 production of Richard Strauss鈥 鈥淒er Rosenkavalier,鈥 was nominated for a Tony Award in 2018 for best actress in a musical for her Broadway debut in a revival of the Rogers & Hammerstein classic 鈥淐arousel.鈥 She also earned rave reviews last year for her role in the world premiere of Kevin Puts鈥 鈥淭he Brightness of Light,鈥 a musical centered on the love affair between artist Georgia O鈥橩eeffe and the older photographer Alfred Stieglitz.
Fleming performed the work in Los Angeles and Chicago in the months after it opened in London last summer.
鈥溾楲ight in the Piazza鈥 was a big step because there was a ton of dialogue in that,鈥 she said of the work, which she will perform in Australia in August.
But while she really enjoyed her Broadway musical turns, she realizes 鈥渢here are not a lot of musicals that are appropriate for me and my voice. These were specifically pieces that were written for a classical singer.鈥
She and Puts are teaming up again on an opera he鈥檚 writing for her that was commissioned by the Met.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a very exciting project,鈥 she said of the work, which still has no title. 鈥淚 brought it to the Met and said, 鈥榃ould you be interested in this by any chance?鈥 and fortunately they said yes.鈥
Fleming said they will premiere it in a concert version in 2022 in Philadelphia ahead of its 2023 fully-staged Met premiere.
