Ryan Green and Cameron Hood 鈥 蜜柚直播鈥檚 Ryanhood folk-rock duo 鈥 decided to take a sabbatical from touring for much of last year to record a followup to their 2017 studio album.
Funny how that timing worked out.
Who would have thought that when they made that decision back in 2019 the entire entertainment world would be forced to hit pause in 2020?
鈥淚t turned out to be pretty good timing to come off the road,鈥 Green said.
This weekend, Ryanhood will perform three concerts hosted by 蜜柚直播 Arts Live to celebrate the release on Friday, April 16, of 鈥淯nder the Leaves.鈥 The evening performances on Friday and Saturday, April 17, are sold out, but there are some tickets available for a matinee concert Saturday.
The album is a musically mesmerizing bluegrass/folk rock collection of songs that takes listeners 鈥淪omewhere under the leaves / Somewhere under my breathing鈥 to a changing world where 鈥淲e鈥檙e heading for disaster in the end / Feels like we鈥檙e caving in.鈥

鈥淯nder the Leaves,鈥 which the pair had mostly written before the COVID-19 pandemic, delves into some heart-wrenching issues, from the somber love song 鈥淪eeing in the Dark鈥 鈥 鈥淒id you ever feel like / Like you made a mistake / Like maybe you stayed / Instead of walking away?鈥 鈥 and the regret-tinged sobering 鈥淚 Didn鈥檛 Have A Chance鈥 鈥 鈥淢aybe if I hadn鈥檛 let you / Let you walk away / You would still be here.鈥
The pair wrote the album as they have their previous ones 鈥 Green pens the music and creates 鈥渂eautiful space,鈥 Hood said, for him to fill with lyrics that are guided by 鈥渉ow the song makes him feel,鈥 Green added during an interview in March.
鈥淗e鈥檚 giving us a place to enter where we can feel the things that I鈥檓 writing lyrics about,鈥 Hood explained.
鈥淚t was kind of fun doing it this way,鈥 added Green, who has been musical partners with Hood since they teamed up nearly 20 years ago.
The pair鈥檚 partnership was the fruit of a friendship born out of competition when the 蜜柚直播 natives were in competing bands at University High School. The two bands competed in local battle of the bands competitions and 鈥渨e were kind of trading victories each year,鈥 Green said.
鈥淚t was just at the end of high school that we kind of, through yearbook signings, admitted our deep respect and admiration for one another,鈥 he said.
Ryanhood鈥檚 debut album, 鈥淪ad and Happiness,鈥 garnered national attention that grew with every new release 鈥 鈥淯nder the Leaves鈥 is their eighth studio album and ninth career album.
