A digital art gallery featuring more than a dozen local artists is now available online.
Artezona 鈥 made to sound like 鈥溍坭种辈,鈥 but also reflective of being in the 鈥渁rt zone鈥 鈥 was the brainchild of founder Liz Hern谩ndez. The gallery can be found at .
Hern谩ndez owned a brick-and-mortar art gallery but shut its doors in 2009 following the recession. When it came to opening a new gallery space, she decided to go digital.
鈥淚 had been thinking about going online for a long time 鈥 several years actually,鈥 Hern谩ndez says. 鈥淗aving had the brick-and-mortar retail space and using technology, I sort of already understood that having an e-commerce site would be a good way to go.
鈥淚t鈥檚 very expensive to have a brick-and-mortar space,鈥 she says. 鈥淎nd I get it 鈥 there鈥檚 no substitute to seeing art in person, that鈥檚 for sure. But we have to adapt to what鈥檚 going on now. People buy stuff online all the time 鈥 it used to be, 鈥業 would never buy a dress online. I have to try it on at the store.鈥 But those attitudes are drastically changing.鈥

She adds that while you can鈥檛 see the art in person before purchasing it, the gallery is still a digital experience. 鈥淚f it doesn鈥檛 work for you, send it back. It鈥檚 not like you鈥檙e stuck with it if it鈥檚 not what you expected,鈥 she says.
Hern谩ndez says that research has also shown that almost half of big art spenders have purchased artwork online.
鈥淚t鈥檚 also a generational thing,鈥 she says, adding that the digital aspect of Artezona makes art more accessible.
Artezona currently features 19 artists, 18 of whom are from 蜜柚直播. Hern谩ndez hopes to open the application process for more artists in January.
Currently, all the artists at Artezona create two-dimensional art, such as photography and paintings. Hernandez hopes to add sculpture work in the future.
Beyond the functionality of the website and its e-commerce capabilities, Hernandez is most proud of the artist narratives that Artezona features.
When clicking on an artist鈥檚 name, viewers will see photos of the artist and their work, a biography, and their credentials including education, past exhibits and any awards they鈥檝e won.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 need to describe the art. The work speaks for itself,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 want to understand the artist.鈥
鈥淭he art is their expression, for sure, and that will resonate with viewers. But for some people, the artists鈥 story resonates with them. It becomes a more meaningful experience.鈥
As for Hern谩ndez, she鈥檚 not an artist herself but has always appreciated art.
鈥淓ven growing up with my parents, we always visited museums and galleries, and I took an art class with my mom when I was 15,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 was always interested but didn鈥檛 have the calling, if you will, to make it a practice. But I鈥檝e always had a passion for it 鈥 a passion for creative expression and music and dance and theater, and so that鈥檚 how I became an advocate.鈥
鈥溍坭种辈 is a creative hub 鈥 we鈥檙e known for attracting creative people,鈥 she says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 a big piece of why I鈥檓 doing this 鈥 to help them get compensated for their work.鈥
