Linus Lerner took his Southern 蜜柚直播 Symphony Orchestra to Mexico over the summer to play in his Opera Festival of San Luis.
And this weekend, he鈥檚 bringing a bit of that festival to 蜜柚直播 to participate in the volunteer orchestra鈥檚 fourth annual Mexican Independence Day concert Friday, Sept. 15, at the Fox 蜜柚直播 Theatre, 17 W. Congress St.
In addition to the orchestra, winners of the 2017 Linus Lerner International Voice Competition, held during the festival, will perform arias and other art songs including 鈥淢on coeur s鈥檕uvre 脿 ta voix鈥 from Saint-Sa毛ns鈥 鈥淪amson and Delilah鈥; 鈥淗abanera鈥 from Bizet鈥檚 鈥淐armen鈥; and Maria Grever鈥檚 鈥淐uando vuelva a tu lado.鈥 Special guests include Liliana del Conde, a well-known singer in Mexico; mezzo-soprano Diana Peralta; baritone Jos茅 Gonz谩lez Caro; and composer/conductor Alejandro S谩nchez-Navarro.

Friday鈥檚 concert, cosponsored by the Consulate of Mexico in 蜜柚直播 and the Instituto Cultural Mexicano de 蜜柚直播, comes on the eve of Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated Sept. 16 to commemorate Mexico鈥檚 liberation from Spain. Tickets are free on a first-come, first-served basis at the Fox 蜜柚直播 Theatre Box Office or the Mexican Consulate office, 3915 E. Broadway.

- Conductor L谩szl贸 Veres will lead his twin orchestras 鈥 the volunteer 蜜柚直播 Symphonic Winds and the professional 蜜柚直播 Pops Orchestra 鈥 in their parks concerts series. The Winds take the stage at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at Veres鈥 namesake amphitheater at Udall Park, 7200 E. Tanque Verde Road. The Pops are up on Sunday, Sept. 17, at Reid Park鈥檚 DeMeester Outdoor Performance Center, East 22nd Street and South Country Club Road. Admission is free to either, although donations are accepted.
- Phoenix-based organist/harpsichordist Guy Whatley returns to what has become his favorite stomping grounds 鈥 蜜柚直播 鈥 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. His recital Sunday, Sept. 17, at Dove of Peace Lutheran Church, 665 W. Roller Coaster Road, also will be the last performance on the church鈥檚 pipe organ, which is undergoing a restoration.
Whatley鈥檚 concert is the 鈥渂efore鈥 segment of the church鈥檚 鈥淏efore and After鈥 series of organ concerts commemorating the congregation鈥檚 plans to invest $250,000 to restore and expand its 40-year-old Moeller pipe organ. The plan is to double the instrument鈥檚 size. He will return sometime in 2018 鈥 when the project is expected to be finished 鈥 to perform the 鈥渁fter鈥 concert.
Sunday鈥檚 concert, featuring works by Bach and Georg B枚hm, starts at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
