A Firebird.
A Faun.
And a first time.
That鈥檚 what鈥檚 in store for 蜜柚直播 Symphony Orchestra audiences on Friday and Sunday, Oct. 20 and 22, at 蜜柚直播 Music Hall.
TSO Conductor Jos茅 Luis Gomez will be at the podium for 鈥淔irebird,鈥 the second installment of the orchestra鈥檚 Classics series. The concert spotlights TSO principal flutist Alexander Lipay on Claude Debussy鈥檚 Prelude to 鈥淭he Afternoon of a Faun鈥 performing arguably one of the most famous flute solos in music.
鈥淔aun鈥 is bookended by Stravinsky鈥檚 Suite from 鈥淔irebird鈥 and the TSO premiere of Alexander Glazunov鈥檚 Symphony No. 4.
It hardly seems conceivable that the TSO, which has been performing since 1929, has never played the Glazunov, composed in 1893. But the work plays a role in maestro Gomez鈥檚 musical life, which explains why he programmed it. Gomez鈥檚 first season is filled with works that played a musical role in the life of the Venezuelan-born Spanish conductor.

鈥淚 chose Symphony No. 4 because it was my first 鈥榗onducting鈥 approach to (Glazunov鈥檚) music,鈥 Gomez said in the program notes. 鈥淚 thought of doing the same with my TSO audience. I am happy to be the first conductor to introduce them to his symphony. We can share the experience of discovering it together.鈥
