had a better view of what was going on backstage than on the stage when she saw the touring production of 鈥淏eauty and the Beast鈥 at 蜜柚直播 Music Hall when she was 13.
But that view ignited in her a passion that has become a career that is bringing her back to her hometown of 蜜柚直播 this week with one of Broadway鈥檚 biggest and most enduring musicals.
Scalpone, a 蜜柚直播 native and 2006 graduate of , is an assistant stage manager on 鈥 which is bringing to Centennial Hall from Sept. 14 to Sept. 25.
鈥淚t is almost a timeless story. It鈥檚 the story about family. It鈥檚 the story about love,鈥 said the 34-year-old, who has called New York City home for the past dozen years. 鈥淚t is music that my generation, we grew up with and it鈥檚 so familiar. And then you get the spectacle of a giant elephant coming through the audience. When do you get that seeing 鈥楬amilton?鈥欌

Scalpone remembers seeing those gigantic animal puppets parading down the aisles of 蜜柚直播 Music Hall when she saw her first 鈥淟ion King鈥 back in 2006, the only time it has played 蜜柚直播. The show ran here for six weeks.
鈥淚 still remember the giraffes coming down. We were right behind the conductor and I remember the elephants coming down the aisle and I saw the giraffes,鈥 she recalled.
Scalpone, who majored in theater production with an emphasis in stage management at the University of 蜜柚直播 and interned at Juilliard, landed her first production job as a teen working backstage with The . She also did an internship with and worked with 蜜柚直播鈥檚 .
鈥淚 got as much theatrical experience I could out of 蜜柚直播,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 love the theater and I love what I do. I never stopped.鈥
Scalpone, whose resume includes dozens of shows on and off Broadway and touring productions, was hired by 鈥淭he Lion King鈥 10 days before the pandemic shut down theaters in March 2020. She sat on the sidelines for 18 months before theaters reopened about a year ago and has been on the road with the production since.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a special musical to see and to be a part of,鈥 she said during a phone call from the show鈥檚 stop in San Diego last week. 鈥淚t鈥檚 Broadway legacy and classic Disney fun.鈥
Because she is a 蜜柚直播 native, Scalpone will be the cast and crew鈥檚 official Old Pueblo tour guide during the show鈥檚 nearly two-week run here. In addition to showing them the , she said she will take them to North Fourth Avenue, which she said represents a big part of 蜜柚直播, and will introduce them to and 蜜柚直播鈥檚 plethora of Mexican food.
鈥淚 need real tortillas and cheese crisps in my life,鈥 she said with a laugh. 鈥淚 complain about Tex-Mex all the time when we鈥檙e on the road. 鈥業t鈥檚 not real Mexican food!鈥 I love . It鈥檚 better than any pizza in New York that I鈥檝e ever had.鈥
