About 650 people turned out last November for the inaugural 鈥淢usical Murals鈥 walk downtown, strolling the two-mile route along a series of murals where 10 student ensembles performed.
Organizers had anticipated maybe 100 people would show up, which is the average participation in November for the weekly urban walks.
No one saw 650 people coming.
鈥淚 printed out 75 maps last year, and they were gone in like three minutes,鈥 said , an assistant professor of bassoon at the who coordinated the event with organizers of the weekly Meet Me At Maynards and her UA colleague Elizabeth Schauer.

Olegario is more prepared for the second annual walk on Monday, Oct. 17. She鈥檚 printing copies of the route 鈥 walkers can choose a longer route that clocks in just under 2 miles or a shorter one that is almost a mile long 鈥 and offering a QR code that allows walkers to download an interactive map that pinpoints each mural and ensemble.
A dozen University of 蜜柚直播 student ensembles covering a variety of musical styles 鈥 folk rock, a chamber string quartet, a saxophone quartet, percussion ensemble, the UA 蜜柚直播 and Symphonic choirs and opera scenes 鈥 will set up along the route near the murals and will perform for the passing crowds. Last year, the crowds lingered and at some stops the student musicians would find themselves performing for audiences that filled the street.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 think some of them have seen an audience that big so that was really special for me as a mentor and teacher,鈥 Olegario said.
鈥淚t鈥檚 an opportunity for us to bring our music to people that probably wouldn鈥檛 otherwise come into our building and sit for a concert,鈥 said Schauer, the Fred Fox School鈥檚 director of choral activities. 鈥淏ut there is a movement toward art and health and this event is at the intersection of that, too.鈥
It was Olegario鈥檚 idea to partner with Meet Me At Maynards. She has been a regular at the weekly event since early 2019; Monday鈥檚 walk will be her 109th.
鈥淚 love the sense of community they have developed over 12 years. There鈥檚 something so fun about having that regularity of simply walking downtown,鈥 said Olegario, who has been teaching at the UA since fall 2018. 鈥淚t鈥檚 so fun to put art together with health and wellness, and why not add music.鈥

El Rio Restoration Project
The El Rio Restoration Project uses the help of local artists and roughly 20 youth volunteers to restore the murals of 蜜柚直播 artist, David Tineo. The artist has graced the El Rio Neighborhood Center with seven murals since 1976, however, the murals have faced vandalism and faded over time. This restoration occurred on Saturday, June 15th, 2019.

Historic Y Mural
A mural titled "Sonora" on the side of the Historic Y building at was completed on December 18, 2018. Karlito Miller Espinosa aka Mata Ruda, the artist, teaches an illustration class in the school of art at the University of 蜜柚直播. With the help of two of his students, Analaura Villegas and Brisa Tzintzun, he completed the commissioned mural within a week. Espinosa says the mural is a quilt of images that represent some of the different organizations that have offices in the building.

First Responder Mural, 2023
Muralist Joe Pagac unveiled his latest mural, dedicated to first responders, at Banner 鈥 University Medicine Center 蜜柚直播 on Wednesday, May 24. Pagac was commissioned to do the mural, which features a Border Patrol agent, a police officer, a firefighter and a paramedic. The mural is 75 feet wide and 16 feet tall. Art promotes healing for caregivers and patients, said Samuel Keim, chair of the Banner department of emergency medicine. The unveiling coincided with the 49th annual National EMS Week, which celebrates the first responder workforce.
