After an almost 30-year absence, alligators are making their way back to the Reid Park Zoo.
A 25-year-old male American alligator, the largest reptiles in North America, arrived at the zoo earlier this week from a zoo in Waco, Texas.Â
According to the Reid Park Zoo, he adjusted easily to his new surroundings.Â
“We expect him to spend the majority of his time in the pool.†said Dr. Sue Tygielski, interim Zoo Administrator. Â
The American alligator is distinguishable from other alligators because it has a rounded snout, and when their jaw is closed, none of the lower teeth are visible. The eyes and snout are also on the top of the head so that they can watch for prey while still submerged.Â
You can see the alligator in his habitat during regular zoo hours, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Sundays.Â
