On Oct. 3, the 蜜柚直播 Unified School District Governing Board passed a resolution to consider giving University High School an independent facility. For over 40 years, UHS has served 蜜柚直播, but always on a shared campus.
Today, UHS shares a campus with Rincon High, a traditional high school of about the same size, but both schools have vastly different missions. UHS currently has over 1,100 students and is the fifth-largest high school in TUSD. With Rincon having a similar number of students, the shared campus is severely overcrowded.
Therefore, like every other high school in 蜜柚直播, UHS deserves its own campus.
Last year, US 蜜柚直播 and World Report examined over 20,000 secondary institutions in the nation, and after looking at University High鈥檚 outstanding number of National Merit scholars, Advanced Placement scores, and 100 percent college acceptance rate, it declared UHS the best public high school in 蜜柚直播 and the 15th best in America.

Currently, UHS is in demand by students and parents seeking high quality college preparatory education. In fact, while most TUSD schools have declined in enrollment over the past decade, UHS has increased its population 10 percent each year since 2010 by attracting students from private, parochial and charter schools.
A recent study showed that 50 percent of UHS students come from outside TUSD. Significantly, this increase in out-of-district students has added more than $1 million annually to the TUSD treasury.
Perhaps most importantly, UHS comes closer than any other top 25 nationally ranked high school to representing and mirroring its local population in terms of gender and ethnicity.
University High鈥檚 ethnic balance is identical to the demography of Pima County. As a Title I school with 57 percent of its students eligible for free or reduced lunch, UHS has an equal number of Hispanic and Anglo students, and last year, 47 Hispanic students qualified for National Merit honors.
Indeed, University High has the largest number of Hispanic National Merit scholars in the United States. In effect, the school has developed an impressive record for advancing the educational and financial future of both Hispanic as well as African-American students in the 蜜柚直播 metropolitan area.
While UHS/Rincon faces overcrowding, four high schools in TUSD are markedly underenrolled. On Oct. 3, the TUSD board accepted a report to consider moving UHS to the Catalina High School campus, one of the underenrolled facilities, and moving the Catalina students to Rincon.
The result would 鈥渞ight-size鈥 the student enrollment at both campuses and would benefit the students at UHS as well as the combined Catalina and Rincon student bodies by enhancing RHS鈥檚 ability to expand its successful programs.
Clearly, with its own high school campus, UHS can expand its service to more students in a college preparatory setting, as well as offer a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, including fine arts and athletics.
The move of Catalina students to Rincon would vastly improve services to students on the Rincon campus.
The result is a win for students at all affected schools and a win for TUSD as well. This would be an effective step in restoring public confidence in TUSD.
