St. Pius X quarterback Grant Gunnell became the all-time passing yards leader in Texas prep history after a 34-14 win over Concordia Lutheran on Friday night in Houston.Â
Gunnell completed 21 of 31 passes for 487 yards and five touchdowns. The ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ Wildcats commit's career total is now up to 14,577 yards, which surpasses Hunter Lile's 14,408 from 2011-14.

The 6-foot-6, 222-pound Gunnell passed notable Texas quarterbacks along the way including Drew Brees, Nick Foles, Andrew Luck, Matthew Stafford, Case Keenum, Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield.Â
Gunnell is fifth all-time in single-season passing yards with 4,973 in 2016 (12 games). Last season's 4,936 yards rank sixth all-time.Â
Gunnell committed to ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ in June and is the highest-ranked recruit of the 2019 class. He spoke to the Star's Michael Lev earlier this season about what his future holds as a quarterback.Â
“I think I’m at the lowest part of my potential honestly,†Gunnell said. “That’s in my head. I know to never stop grinding. That’s a constant thing — to keep learning.â€
The future ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ quarterback will graduate in the winter and plans to enroll at UA in January for the spring semester.
“I’ve got it all set up,†Gunnell said. “I’ve got all the credits. It’s basically a free semester to get used to college life, learn the style of the program and get with the players before summer starts.â€
St. Pius X is 7-1 this season and will head into a bye next week before playing Antonian Prep in San Antonio on Nov. 2.Â
