Cienega won its first-ever conference championship this year and entered the class 5A boys soccer state tournament as a No. 4 seed — the highest in program history.Â
The Bobcats' state championship hopes were dashed Wednesday night by Flowing Wells. Jose Diaz and Alberto Villegas both scored as the Caballeros upset the Bobcats 2-0 to continue in the Class 5A state state tournament. They'll face No. 5 Scottsdale Chaparral in Saturday's second round.
“It’s the hardest loss we ever had,†Cienega assistant coach Je Moore said. “We played a great team. They deserve it. They earned it.â€
Four other ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥-area schools — Sunnyside, Desert View, Salpointe Catholic and Sabino — won to continue onto the second round. Cienega, Rincon/University, Ironwood Ridge, Catalina Foothills, Nogales and Empire were eliminated.Â
