The Pima County Superior Court is warning residents about a jury service scam.
The court said in a news release Wednesday that it has received several reports of someone falsely claiming to be a law enforcement officer or court official calling local residents advising them they are being contacted because of their failure to appear for jury duty.
The caller advises that because they failed to report to jury duty they must pay a fine. The caller tells the person to pay the fine by obtaining a prepaid debit card.
The caller is not from the court nor the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Officials would not contact a person by telephone or email and demand a payment for a fine to avoid being arrested for failing to appear for jury duty.
Residents who get this type of scam call should never give out their credit- or debit-card numbers, never provide the number of any prepaid debit card obtained and should not give out their Social Security number.

If a person does fail to appear for jury service, they may be mailed a notice card with a phone number to call to reschedule their jury service, officials said.
The Superior Court urges anyone contacted by potential scammers to immediately call the Jury Commissioner’s Office at 724-4222, to verify whether a jury summons is in effect.
Anyone who has lost money to this type of scam should contact law enforcement.
