The ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ Wildcats have for an assistant coach, as veteran aide Steve Robinson is expected to retire soon.
All of the Wildcats’ other four assistants — Jack Murphy, TJ Benson, Rem Bakamus and Ken Nakagawa — are expected to return next season. But while UA has not formally announced a departure, head coach Tommy Lloyd confirmed on Saturday that Robinson would be retiring.

Robinson did not respond to a text message seeking comment Friday, but UA’s posting seeks an assistant to handle duties in all facets of coaching, including scouting opponents, recruiting, practice preparation and community outreach.
Robinson, 67, joined Lloyd’s first UA staff in 2021-22 and has been the Wildcats’ most experienced assistant over the past four seasons. Before joining the Wildcats, Robinson was a longtime assistant coach under Roy Williams at Kansas and North Carolina, and also a head coach at Tulsa and Florida State.

Robinson was 46-18 in two seasons at Tulsa, leading the Golden Hurricane to the 1995-96 and 1996-97 NCAA Tournaments, before leaving for Florida State. Facing ACC competition, Robinson led the Seminoles to the 1998 tournament but was fired in 2002 after four straight losing seasons.
“It’s like just like anything else, you’re not retained and you’re going to have some thought process,†Robinson said after he was hired at UA in 2021. “I knew I was a better coach than I was able to always get them to perform. So leaving them was kind of hard, but one door closes and another one opens.â€

Robinson returned to Kansas to work with Williams again for one more season, 2002-03, before moving with Williams to North Carolina for the 2003-04 season. Robinson stayed with Williams and North Carolina for 18 seasons, earning a 2019 induction into the A Step Up Hall of Fame for assistant coaches, until Williams retired after the 2020-21 season.
When Hubert Davis was hired to replace Williams at North Carolina in the spring of 2021, Robinson was not retained. But Robinson had come to know Lloyd through Gonzaga and coach Mark Few, eventually opting later that summer to join Lloyd’s new staff at ÃÛèÖÖ±²¥ after Jason Terry left the Wildcats to become a G League head coach.
“My wife and I sat down and had long discussions about, ‘What do you think?’†Robinson said, chuckling during a September 2021 interview. “I think more than anything else, she wanted to just get me out of the house. I’ve been on the move the whole time and all of a sudden the last four months I’ve been around.
“She says, ‘I think it’s about time for you to go back to work.’â€
